Comparing Moving Company Quotes: What to Watch For

Moving can be exciting, but there is a lot to figure out before moving day. That’s why it’s important to do your homework and choose a moving company that fits your needs.

Before choosing a moving service, you'll likely request a number of moving quotes. Because a lot of moving companies quote differently, it’s important to know what to watch for.

When comparing moving quotes, ask these questions:

How much will my stuff weigh?

Most people don’t know the answer to this question, and that can end up costing thousands of dollars.

When quoting on a move to a new city, most traditional moving companies quote based on the actual weight of a loaded truck. It’s quite common for moving companies to quote based on 4,000 or 5,000 lbs of contents for a 3-bedroom home, however, this is often much lower than the actual weight when measured on a scale (which cannot be done until the truck is loaded).

We have helped thousands of customers move over the years. In that time, we’ve found that, on average, the contents of a fully loaded 20' BigSteelBox (which is usually enough space for the contents of a 3 to 4-bedroom home, without the appliances) will weigh about 7,500 lbs.

A 20' BigSteelBox moving container can hold up to 10,000 lbs. So, once we know the distance of our customer’s move, they know upfront what their move will cost. And, that quote will not change unless their load is over the 10,000 lbs limit, or if they need an additional container.

So, instead of basing our quotes on the weight of your contents, we quote based on the container size, number of containers, and the distance of the move. Check out this detailed guide for How to Compare Moving Company Quotes.

If you do decide that a full service mover is the right choice for you, it’s a good idea to make sure all of your comparable quotes are using the same weight so you’re comparing apples to apples. Then, have them provide a quote at a higher weight. Find out what it would cost if your load is 2,000 or 3,000 lbs more than estimated. This way, you can plan for that scenario.

Will I need storage in between homes?

Be sure to confirm to the date and time you’ll need to be out of your current home. If it doesn’t line up perfectly with the possession date of your new home, you’ll need to consider storage options for the time in between.

When requesting a quote, ask the moving company if they provide storage in between homes. If they don’t, you may need to make additional arrangements with a storage company.

Another thing to consider when you need storage in between is the extra loading and unloading required if your belongings need to be placed in a storage unit.

Luckily, when you move with a BigSteelBox, storage in between homes is never an issue! That’s because we can keep your loaded container at one of our secure storage facilities for as long as necessary, until you’re ready to have it delivered to your new home.

There’s no unloading and reloading required.

Can I complete my entire move in 1 or 2 days?

Whether you’re renting a moving truck or considering a full service moving company, you’ll need to think about the timing. With both of those options, you’ll likely be looking a completing the entire process in 1 day on either end of your move, which is very stressful.

Ask yourself: Would a little extra time to pack and unpack my things take some of the stress off?

When you move with a BigSteelBox, your quote includes the 1-month rental of the moving container. This means you can use that time however you wish: Take 2 weeks to pack, and 2 weeks to unpack, or 3 weeks to pack and 1 week to unpack… the choice is yours!

And, if you want even more time on either end of your move, no problem! In most cities, the monthly rental rate of a 20' BigSteelBox is $149*, so that’s all you’ll be charged for each additional month you keep your Box.

Am I comfortable driving a moving truck myself, or would I rather leave the driving to someone else?

In order to move a 2-4 bedroom home, you will need to rent a 20' - 26' moving truck. If you're not comfortable driving a vehicle of that size, or you’re worried about having to drive in bad weather or on busy roads or Highways, this may not be the best option for you.

When you move with BigSteelBox, we do the driving. We deliver and pick-up your BigSteelBox on your schedule. And, rest assured, our placement technicians are very skilled and take great care to protect your driveway throughout the process.
