Tips to Avoid 5 of the Most Common Causes of Stress When You’re Moving

Friends eating pizza while movingDid you know that June 30th is the busiest moving day in Canada?

According to recent census results, approximately 1.6 million Canadian families move every year, and around 13% of those moves take place in June. Of those moves, one-third happen on June 30!

So, why is June 30 the busiest moving day of the year? There are a few reasons...

First, it’s the end of the school year, which makes it a more convenient time for families with children to move. In addition, not only is it the end of the month, which is a very common time for the change over of homes, but June 30 gives people an extra day to get their move done because it runs into July 1, which is Canada Day and often results in a long weekend. And of course, no matter where you live in Canada, June 30 is usually a safe bet for good weather, which is always a nice thing to have on moving day!

BigSteelBox has been providing Canadians with local and long distance moving services and mobile storage for over a decade. We’re committed to truly understanding our customers’ needs and helping make your move as stress-free as possible. After supporting over 38,000 Canadians with their moving and storage needs over the years, we’ve seen it all when it comes to packing up and relocating. And, while moving is an exciting time for many families, it’s often a very stressful time too.

What are the 5 Most Common Causes of Stress When Moving?

1) Not having enough time to pack and unpack

The key to every successful move is planning ahead. But, even if you have everything packed into moving boxes for the day of your move, there is still a lot of work to do to get those boxes, furniture and other items out of your current home and into your new home. The thought of having to pack, load, move, and unpack all your stuff in one day is a very stressful scenario for anyone.

With BigSteelBox, we’ll deliver your Box as far in advance of moving day as you want. This allows you to pack on your own timeline. Once your BigSteelBox is full, we’ll pick it up and move it to your new home where you can take your time unpacking it as well. And, if your new home isn’t quite ready yet, no problem! We can move your loaded BigSteelBox to one of our secure locations until you’re ready to have it delivered to your new home.

2) Ensuring your belongings are safe from theft and damage

Whether you’re moving down the street or across the country, there’s no question that packing up your worldly belongings is a stressful experience.

Depending on the type of moving company you choose, whether it’s a traditional moving service, a moving truck, or a moving container company like BigSteelBox, you may be asking yourself:

  • Will everything make it to my new home in one piece?
  • How secure are my belongings?
  • Will I have to replace anything after the move?

We know that moving to a new home is no easy task, that’s why BigSteelBox makes sure our customers know what to expect from us throughout the process and we’ll provide you with packing tips to help you every step of the way. With BigSteelBox, you can take your time packing and you'll know your things are being well cared for because you're in control of the entire packing and unpacking process.

Once your BigSteelBox is packed and your items are secured, you can rest assured knowing your things will be safe inside the container. Our Boxes are wind, water and rodent-proof, and they come equipped with a Lock Box that protects your padlock from bolt cutters and theft. And, with BigSteelBox, you keep the key, so you know that no one else will be able to access your things at any point while they are inside your moving container.

3) Move-out and move-in dates don't match up

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where your move-out and move-in dates don’t quite line up? This happens more often than you might think, especially if you are selling and buying in a hot market.

Maybe the finishing touches are being put on your new home and it isn’t quite ready for move-in, or maybe the closing and possession dates don’t line up between your old home and new one. With a BigSteelBox, you can keep your BigSteelBox at one of our secure locations for as long as you need interim storage. We’ll deliver your BigSteelBox to your new home as soon as you’re ready for it.

4) Financial strain and unexpected costs

You may have heard the horror stories of being stuck with an exorbitant bill after a move. If you’ve been shopping around for a long distance moving company, you’re probably aware that many moving companies quote and charge based on weight. Unfortunately, it’s common for the final bill to be quite a bit higher than the quote with this method, simply because the weight of your items ends up being more than anticipated.

Reputable moving companies will try and give you an accurate estimation of the weight based on your items and size of home, but the final bill is always based on the weight reported at the scale after the truck is fully loaded. This is how most of the extra charges occur.

The most important thing you can do is pay attention to the cost per pound on your estimate. This is obviously the most variable number, and can increase dramatically if the weight is under estimated.

For this reason, if you are using a moving company that charges by weight, we strongly recommend you have the company visit your home to inspect your things so they can provide a realistic quote and you can avoid hidden fees in the end.

Most moving companies will give estimates based on a load of 4,000 - 5,000 lbs. To put this into perspective, a 20-foot BigSteelBox will hold up to 10,000 lbs. In our experience, the average loaded 20' BigSteelBox usually weighs about 7,500 lbs (which is the size needed to move most 3 to 4 bedroom homes, excluding appliances).

At BigSteelBox we charge based on the number and size of moving containers you need, and the distance of the move. This means we can quote a firm price before your move, and there won’t be any hidden fees or variable costs at the end of the move.

If you’re using a moving truck company to help you with a local move, they will most likely charge an hourly rate based on the size of the truck and the number of people on the crew. This is more predictable than charging by weight, but you still need to have a realistic expectation for how long the move will take. Make sure you understand the expectations for coffee breaks and lunch breaks, and that you’ll also likely be charged for transportation from the company’s office and the two homes.

With BigSteelBox the price we quote you is the price you’ll pay.

5) Deciding what to move and what to toss

The last major cause of stress Canadians encounter is sorting through their belongings. Deciding what to take with you, what to store, and what to say goodbye to is a challenging and time-consuming process.

BigSteelBox can lessen the stress associated with this process by providing you with more options and extra time to sort through your things. If you need easy access to your items but don’t have room in your house or garage, we can help.

You can store your BigSteelBox on your property for as long as you need it, so your things are right outside your front door, or you can have it moved to one of our secure locations. Even when your Box is being kept at our storage yard, you can get access to your things whenever you need to, just give us 24 hours notice to have it set out in our customer access area.
