Food Collection Drive and Farmer's Market a Success in Ontario

Eden-Food-Kitchener-Bigsteelbox_small.jpgWe’re happy to report that Eden Food for Change in Mississauga, ON, has enjoyed a very successful season thanks to the generous support of the community.

BigSteelBox was happy to provide a storage container to the Eden Food for Change Farmers’ Market held weekly at the Lisgar GO Train Station near Mississauga, where they provided the community access to local growers and food producers.

"As a food-focused organization we strive to provide more opportunities for people to access healthy, local food," says Christina Philips, Community Engagement Coordinator for Eden Food for Change.

"Setting up a market can be a lot of work and having the BigSteelBox on site helped ease the amount of work that needed to be done each week as we could store tables, tents, signage and supplies on site, which allowed our volunteers easier access and saved time on what is already a long day."

The organization also offers a Fresh Produce Box program, where people purchase a $10 or $20 box of assorted fruits and vegetables but actually receive twice the amount of healthy food that they would get for the same price in a grocery store.

"We estimate that we serve anywhere from 250-400 families a week with our Fresh Produce Box program," continues Philips. "This program is open to anyone in the community, and is popular because it removes the stigma around a 'food bank'. It is also helping families that are financially struggling but might not be struggling so much as to qualify for a food bank."

BigSteelBox currently has stores in London and Kitchener, ON. Learn more about Eden Food for Change at edenffc.org.
