Portable Storage Donation to Habitat for Humanity Home Building Project
Habitat for Humanity Okanagan - North will soon begin building a triplex home in Vernon, which will be home to three deserving families by the end of the year.
BigSteelBox is proud to support this home building project by donating two BigSteelBoxes to keep building supplies, equipment and materials safe on the construction site.
The mobile storage containers were also used to store the many donations from the community that were sold in a fundraising garage sale to raise money for the project (see photos right and below).
"Habitat receives several types of donations from the community, such as furniture and building supplies," says Glory Westwell of Habitat for Humanity Okanagan – North. “These donations add up very quickly, and with our Habitat re-store being in Kelowna, we needed a place to store the donated items."
"BigSteelBox came to our aid in November 2015, when we received a large donation from Kal Tire," Westwell says. "Kal Tire was demolishing their old office building on 48th Avenue in Vernon, and they donated all the furniture and fixtures to Habitat. We would not have been able to accept this donation if we did not have the two BigSteelBoxes to store the items in."
Habitat uses the storage to keep the items safe and sells many of the donations at their re-store. All funds received goes directly to building Habitat homes in Vernon. This allows them to sell the homes at fair market value to hard working families who qualify for a Habitat mortgage. They do not ask for a down payment or interest, however, families are asked to provide Habitat with 500 hours of "sweat equity" by helping build their own home.
So far, two families have qualified to receive Habitat homes in Vernon, and they are looking for a third. If you know of anyone who might be interested, or if you would like to find a way to donate or volunteer for this great organization, please visit www.vernonhabitat.com.
