Tips for Buying a New or Used Shipping Container – Video

We sell both new, premium used, and used shipping containers from all of our BigSteelBox stores across Canada. Here’s a brief description of new vs. used shipping containers:

• New BigSteelBoxes are “one-trip” containers, received directly from our manufacturing plant in China. They’re white, have waist-height door handles, and Lock Boxes welded to the doors.
• Premium used BigSteelBoxes were once “one trip” containers that have been used in our Canadian moving and storage rental fleet for several years. They have a neutral-coloured exterior, likely with minor cosmetic damages and large BigSteelBox decals, waist-height doors, and Lock Boxes.
• Used containers come in 3 different grades (low, mid, or high), may have some rust, dents, and come in different colours. Lock Boxes can be purchased and installed prior to delivery. We encourage customers to visit a BigSteelBox store before making a decision.

If you’re looking to purchase a shipping container that will be placed in a highly visible location where looks matter, or you’re planning to store goods that you want to keep in pristine condition, like paperwork or furniture, we recommend purchasing a new BigSteelBox.

If you’re looking for a container to store things like yard or farm equipment, dirt bikes, quads or sleds*, and you’re not worried about exterior appearance, a used container may be the best option for you.

“If you’re looking to buy a shipping container, BigSteelBox carries both new “1-trip” containers, as well as used containers. One key benefit of our new 1-trip containers is the waist-height handles that make it really easy to open and close.

They’re also wind and rodent-proof so your stuff will stay clean, safe and dry. All of our new 1-trip BigSteelBoxes come equipped with a steel lock box that fits a padlock up inside for security. Once locked, it doesn’t allow bolt cutters to get inside to cut it.

If you’re looking to purchase a used BigSteelBox and you want it to be wind and rodent-proof, there are a few key things to look for.

First of all, check your door seals to make sure they’re well intact throughout the entire container, as well as between the doors, and they’re not coming off the Box.

Also, look for any surface rust around the container. You don’t want any deep rust that could puncture a hole.

You’ll also want to check out the door handles to confirm that they’re nice and smooth, and that your door hinges aren’t rusted and run smooth.”
