Common Questions and Answers about the Delivery and Transport of a BigSteelBox

If you’ve never rented a portable storage container before, then you likely have questions about the security and uses of a BigSteelBox, as well as the delivery and transport process.

Different moving container and portable storage container companies have varying methods of transporting your storage unit from point A to point B. Here are the most frequently asked questions we get from customers about the delivery and transport process of a BigSteelBox container.

How do I arrange for the delivery of a portable storage container?

When you’re ready to have your BigSteelBox delivered, please contact your Storage Consultant directly to set up a time that works for you. If you choose to order online, you can also schedule your delivery in our portal.

Whether you call in or order online, we’ll ask you questions such as:

• Where do you want your container to be placed on your property?
• What door direction do you prefer?
• Is the delivery area paved?
• Are there any overhead wires or shrubbery we need to be aware of?
• Can you confirm that there will be no parked vehicles on the street that could prevent our Placement Technicians from delivering your BigSteelBox?

How soon can my storage unit be delivered?

Delivery time depends on a variety of factors, which include our availability of storage containers and delivery vehicles in your area, the distance from our store to the delivery location, the number of storage containers you need, and the kind of accessories you may require.

Typically, it takes 2-3 business days from the time you order your BigSteelBox to the time it’s delivered. However, in cases where delivery is required sooner, we’ll do our very best to accommodate urgent requests. When requesting re-delivery of your loaded BigSteelBox, please give us 3-4 business days notice prior to the date you need delivery.

How will you deliver my storage container?

Most BigSteelBox locations have delivery trucks onsite, ready to transport your storage container after you’ve completed your order.

We’ll need at least 70′ of space in a direct line to place a 20′ container on your property. This includes the length of the Box, the length of the deck that extends backwards and the length of the truck.

Will my contents shift during the loading, unloading or transport process?

While ultimately the packing of the BigSteelBox is up to you, when items are packed and tied down correctly, there should be no shifting of contents inside the BigSteelBox.

When we load or unload your BigSteelBox during a pick-up or delivery, the container will be tilted on a slight angle. However, the entire process moves very slowly, and the force on your contents is minor compared to what they would experience during any form of transport.

Whenever contents are moved by truck (full-service mover, rental truck or moving container), the turning, braking and going up and down hills impacts your contents far more than the delivery or pick-up of a BigSteelBox.

It’s very important to pack your contents carefully, load them properly, and ensure everything inside the container is secured with tie downs using the D-rings along the inside of your BigSteelBox.

How do I secure my contents inside the BigSteelBox?

Every new BigSteelBox comes with D-ring hooks pre-installed every 4’ along the interior walls (top and bottom). Ratchet Straps hook into these D-rings and are perfect for securing your belongings for transit. You can also secure sections of the container by connecting the straps diagonally across the box in a giant X.

Do I have to be present for the delivery of my storage unit?

No. At the time of booking the delivery of your BigSteelBox, your Storage Consultant will ask you a number of questions regarding your delivery so that our Placement Technicians have all the information they need to deliver your BigSteelBox. These same questions are asked in our portal if you choose to order online.

So, while you’re welcome to be present for your delivery, if there are no possible obstacles or special instructions that need to be relayed to the Driver on the day of delivery, there is no need for you to be present.

Will the storage unit damage my driveway?

All of our BigSteelBoxes are delivered by experienced Drivers, who place wood blocks underneath each corner post as the container comes off the back of the truck, so the BigSteelBox doesn’t actually make contact with your driveway.

Driveways poured in concrete rarely have any damage unless there are pre-existing cracks. Asphalt driveways are more susceptible to depressions being left on the surface, but this is also not common. If this is a concern, you should discuss it with one of our Storage Consultants prior to delivery.

What if I don’t have room at my location for a BigSteelBox to be delivered?

No problem. Our delivery trucks need at least 70 feet of space in a direct line to place a 20-foot container on your property, or 60 feet in a direct line to place a 10-foot container. But, we realize that not all our customers can accommodate that.

If your property doesn’t have room for a BigSteelBox to be delivered, we can still help meet your storage needs. At most of our locations, you can bring your things to your BigSteelBox store to load the container. Just give your store at least 1 full business day (24 hours) notice to arrange to have a new container brought to the loading area for you. You can then pack your container while at our facility and we’ll keep it for you in our yard. If you need to access it again, just let your store know 1 full business day (24 hours) in advance of your arrival.

Please note, we charge a storage and handling fee to keep your container at a BigSteelBox yard, which our Storage Consultants will explain during the quoting process.

Can my BigSteelBox be moved across Provinces?

A BigSteelBox can be transported from our locations to almost anywhere in Canada, including the Maritimes!

For long distance moves, your loaded container will be moved from your current home to the closest BigSteelBox store, where it will be picked up by a long haul transport company. Once moved to your new city, it will be delivered to the nearest BigSteelBox store and from there, we can store your Box or deliver it to your new home.

Long distance move timeframes vary based on the route. When you request a quote for your long distance move your Storage Consultant will give you the options available to you. These options are also be available if you choose to order online. Most routes offer Standard, Expedited and Economy transport timelines and pricing for you to choose from.
